Textbook Adoption

In November and December 1997, the California State Board of Education (SBE) adopted content standards for English-language arts and mathematics. In October 1998, the SBE adopted content standards for history-social science and science. In addition to the content standards, the SBE adopted curriculum frameworks for kindergarten through grade twelve. Taken together, the content standards and the curriculum frameworks describe what educators and professionals in the field expect Kindergarten through grade twelve students to know and be able to do. Based on national research in education and the specific content area, the frameworks (which incorporate the applicable content standards) provide a firm foundation for curriculum and instruction by describing the scope and sequence of the knowledge and skills all students need to master. In turn, the frameworks provide direction to the textbook publishers in that each framework includes criteria for the evaluation of instructional resources.

The SBE has constitutional authority to adopt textbooks for grades one through eight and statutory authority to adopt instructional materials for kindergarten. During the 2008/2009 school year the district piloted a couple of mathematics programs. The following mathematics recommendations were submitted and approved by the Board of Trustees in August, 2009. These textbooks were used beginning with the 2009-10 school year.

California HSP Math for grades K-2, enVision Math California for grades 3-5, Holt: Course 1: Numbers to Algebra for grade 6, Holt: Course 2: Pre Algebra for grade 7, and Holt Geometry for grade 8. Holt Algebra was purchased for the 2008-09 school year.

Primary adoptions are conducted every six years for the four core curriculum areas (Mathematics, English-Language Arts, History-Social Science and Science). In July, 2009, the adopted budget for the state of California suspended the current adoption cycle and postponed the requirement to purchase instructional materials until 2012-13 in the following order: mathematics in 2015, and reading/language arts in 2016, history/social science in 2017, science in 2018.
